Talk to save the Proton

According to a report by The Edge, talks between the automaker Proton Holding Bhd and Europe's largest automaker, Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen parts manufacturer famous Van --- which began last year have not been pushed through depending on what the Malaysian government is hoping for. The newspaper said that officials from Proton and Volkswagen met on several occasions, but no concrete agreement has been developed. The newspaper also added that the talks were not going well and it seems that the German automaker has somewhat "cooled" and seems less anxious lately. The newspaper also quoted a source familiar with the situation by saying: "This delay could reveal some doubts." The Malaysian government is also under pressure to announce details of the partnership for the loss of Proton, which has lost its status as the largest-selling car rival Perodua. The Government believes that the new Proton, the partnership with Volkswagen, it can help to recover. Last week, Proton announced its third consecutive quarter of losses which it blamed increased competition on sales and stagnation. The company obtained a net loss of 281.45 million rgt for the third quarter ended December as compared to net income, it took a year before, amounting to 86.51 million rgt. The second finance minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop said the government would publish an announcement on Proton's strategic partner this month. Nobody knows if it is still a Volkswagen or other company. But according to The Edge newspaper, "If this timetable is adhered to strictly, sources say General Motors, the largest automaker in the world, could well become the preferred partner for Proton. The main goal of having a partnership with Proton foreign car is expected to prevent a further decline in market share as competition intensifies. It should be noted that when news of a possible partnership with Volkswagen fled Proton shares rose, but after the announcement of this partnership has not been confirmed from Proton plunged. Apart from Volkswagen, Proton has also been in talks with GM and PSA Peugeot Citroen of France more than three automotive companies in Malaysia that have shown interest in buying stakes in the company. It should be noted that the Malaysian government owns 59 percent of Proton, including a 43% owned by Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the government. Proton Targets 3,500 MPV Units Monthly Production

PETALING JAYA, Proton Holdings Bhd plans a monthly production of 3,000 to 3,500 units of its first multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) named Exora beginning next month.

"We have already started the preliminary production and full production will start next month leading to launch in April," said managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir after the official announcement of the MPV name here today.

He said total investment in the MPV was RM450 million, including RM60 million to RM70 million allocated to modify the plant in Shah Alam as development of the model started from zero and it will be the first Malaysian designed MPV.

Asked why the MPV is being produced at the Shah Alam plant and not in Tanjung Malim, Syed Zainal Abidin said: "We are trying to optimise by putting minimum investment and modification to our medium volume factory in Shah Alam.

"Given the expenditure today, the company took the opportunity to make the decision to build in Shah Alam," he said.

Powered by 1.6-litre CamPro engine, the new Exora will open for booking from Feb 21 at all 293 Proton Edar and EON sales offices nationwide. It is priced at below RM80,000 and the booking fee is set at RM1,000.

The Exora is based on the name of the Ixora flower.

Syed Zainal Abidin said delivery of the MPV will be in April for those who book this Saturday.

Asked on the response for the new Exora, Proton Holdings' chairman Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh said: "Even though the country is hit by the global financial crisis, the response for national cars is still very good."

He said having a second car was the local trend as "the Malaysian family is quite big and this vehicle is a requirement in the market".

Being designed for family, the model will be affordable, spacious and comfortable, he added.

On Proton's plan to export the new Exora, Mohd Nadzmi said the company will start exporting the new MPV to Thailand and Indonesia in July but initially the model will be for domestic market.

He said Proton is excited with the opportunity as MPV was a new segment for the company and 60 percent of the Indonesian market is under the MPV segment.

Asked why the name of the new MPV is not Malaysian flavour, Mohd Nadzmi said: "As we progress in time, the car industry is a global industry. We cannot be to nationalistic in terms of our outlook."

For long-term survival, Proton has to look overseas because the local market is too small, he said.

Proton Exora CPS MPV features list teaser scan

Click for high resolution image

Here is the latest Proton Exora teaser ad insertion scanned from today’s The Star. There are loads of more details about the MPV, so let me just list them here for those who are kinda lazy to load the full-resolution version of the photo to read the details.

* Campro CPS Engine - Proton claims enough power to transport 7 adults with a full load of luggage while maintaining fuel efficiency. The first part of believable but I’m doubtful about the second part, you can’t have the best of both worlds, not with a regular twincam normally aspirated engine like the Campro CPS. Power output is quoted at 125hp and 150Nm of torque which is equivalent to the output in the Waja CPS, GEN2 CPS and Satria Neo CPS, but some parameters such as CPS and VIM activation points may have been changed, we’ll only find out at the launch.
* Quiet Cabin - Proton claims a quiet cabin because of sound absorption material (they use the word technology).
* Ride & Handling - As usual, the Lotus brand name and their involvement in tuning the suspension settings for Proton cars are being pushed as a selling point for the Exora MPV.
* Small Turning Radius - Proton says the Exora has a turning radius of 5.3 meters. A turning radius is essentially the radius of a small circular turn, or a U-turn that the vehicle is capable of making. The smaller the number, the less space required by a vehicle to U-turn. Note that there are two types of turning radius that can be specified - curb-to-curb or wall-to-wall which is measured either by the distance travelled by the wheels or including the whole car including body overhangs and etc, with the latter being more accurate of course. Let’s compare to some other MPVs - 5.2 meters for the Toyota Passo Sette (this could be the upcoming Perodua MPV), Toyota Wish - 5.3 meters, Nissan Grand Livina - 5.2 meters, Honda Stream - 5.4 meters, Mazda 5 - 5.3 meters, Toyota Alphard - 5.7 to 5.9 meters, Toyota Rush - 5.2 meters.
* Intelligent Electronic Body Control Programme - I’m not sure what this is. Proton calls this an integrated module which allows you to recalibrate electronic components to suit your driving needs such as wipers and signal lights. I am told that this is a central control module which communicates with various components of the car including the examples given. My source tells me this is more of something that works behind the scenes at the moment and there is not much of a user interface to control but I suspect this will allow some form of user controllability in the future such as programmable follow-me home lights and etc just by adding a user interface to it.
* LED tail lamps and brake lights - We already know this from the spyshots.

Read our past coverage of the Proton Exora while we patiently count down to its launch, expected to be in April 2009.

Proton's New MPV To Improve Market Share

Malaysia: Proton's New MPV To Improve Market Share

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Proton's market share may rise marginally despite the economic slowdown and slower auto sales in 2009 due to its multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) launch in the first quarter this year, according to international consultants Frost & Sullivan.

"Proton will hold its market share in the car segment and gain a little market share in the MPV segments because it is not competing in the segment at the moment. It will be additional sales for Proton," said the firm's partner and head of the automotive and transportation practice for Asia Pacific, Kavan Mukhtyar.

Speaking at a media briefing on the Malaysian automotive outlook here Tuesday (6 Jan), Mukhtyar said Proton's market share is estimated to have increased to 28.7% last year from 26.6% in 2007.

He said the share increase was contributed by the new Proton Saga model, which added 24,000 units to the national carmaker's total sales in 2008.

"It is very clear that Proton is now really developing models which are customer-based and on strong customer feedback," he added.

According to Mukhtyar, Proton should focus on increasing its production and volume because to keep launching new models at a frequent pace, the carmaker needed economies of scale.

He said Proton, which was currently recording sales of 150,000 to 160,000 units, needed to produce at least 250,000 units in order to launch new models every year and support research and development costs.

"Proton should also launch new accessories focusing on the women segment, and have more proactive brand management and better after-sales service," he suggested.

On the national automotive industry, Mukhtyar said the government should clarify on the segments that the country wanted to focus and provide details on incentives in order to further develop the industry.

Such issues, he said, are expected to be addressed by the National Automotive Policy which is due to be launched in March or April this year. (Bernama)

First Malaysian MPV EXORA by PROTON

Yes! Malaysia Boleh!, the slogan means " Malaysia Can". Proton Malaysia launched the new MPV which is the first MPV model for the Malaysian Market.

The new Proton Exora is here and two variants will be available at launch time – a 1.6 liter automatic high-line and a 1.6 liter automatic medium-line, priced at RM75,998.00 and RM69,998.00 respectively OTR with insurance. Head on after the jump for the full scoop on the Exora.

The EXORA uses the new Campro CPS engine which produces 125 horsepower (127 PS) at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,500rpm.

The Proton Exora H-Line adds cruise control, the LCD screen with car DVD player for a great travel experience with the car audio and video and great car speakers, leather seats, and slightly different trim on the outside – chrome for the grille and rear, as well as blacked out B and C pillars using some convincing black stickers. The H-Line also provides GPS devices for travel convenience.

It’s good to know that the Bluetooth hands-free, car receivers and audio streaming functionality of the 2-DIN head unit has been retained in the M-Line. If you notice, the leather seats in the H-Line version have a combination material - there is a suede-like material at the sides, which according to Proton was intentionally left there so that the leather would be allowed to expand and contract in a certain way under the hot Malaysian climate and thus reduce the chances of them cracking.
